Stomach bread contains stomach-friendly spices - hence the name - such as cloves, cinnamon, star anise and mace. Cocoa is responsible for the dark brown color of stomach bread. Honey was originally used to sweeten it, but sugar is also used today. Stomach bread is a specialty from northern Switzerland and southern Germany, where it was known as "herb bread" even before chocolate was added.
